At Durham Children’s Aid Foundation, we encounter numerous critical and urgent care requests that extend beyond the scope of services offered by child welfare agencies. These pressing needs, reported by dedicated Durham CAS Child and Youth workers, are distinct in that they lack government funding.
Our commitment to addressing these urgent needs is unwavering. Each request undergoes thorough review by the DCAF Executive Director and/or the Board of Trustees. This meticulous process ensures that every request is scrutinized for its merit and appropriateness before any assistance is provided.
It’s important to note that the financial support we provide is never disbursed directly to the Durham Children’s Aid Society. Instead, the donor-supported funds are channeled directly to service providers, counselors, or schools. This ensures a direct and immediate impact on the lives of those in need.
Your support makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children, youth, and families facing critical situations in the Durham Region. Together, we can create a positive impact and provide essential care where it is needed the most.
Urgent and Critical Care Fund Requests:
- Crisis intervention counselling for youth and family members who have suffered significant trauma.
- Emergency financial support for food, urgent dental care and clothing for families and youth in transition.
- Emergency support for youth living independently (i.e., shelter, educational supports).
- Financial support for special family needs (i.e. funding for family outings) and recreational activities (i.e. art therapy, sports, music).
Comfort Kits – for Children
Special Comfort Kits make transitions into care easier for children at Durham CAS. These kits, including pajamas, a toy or book, personal care items, and a backpack, offer comfort and a sense of ownership. Despite their simplicity, these kits become a source of solace and something the children can truly call their own. Your support provides them with essential belongings and a symbol of comfort during a crucial period of adjustment. Comfort Kits for Children are partially funded through the generous support of the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada.
Teaming up with renowned clothing retailers, Peel Children’s Aid Foundation and Refa’s Thrift Closet collaborate to provide new clothing items for children, youth, and families. The Foundation oversees delivery coordination and recruits volunteers for periodic ‘pop-up stores.
Family Assistance Supporting Children and Youth
The Durham Children’s Aid Foundation’s Family Assistance Program provides vital funding support for over 4,000 children, youth, and families facing financial challenges. Amid limited resources, families grapple with anxiety and stress, resulting in reduced food supplies, housing needs, and the necessity for toys and clothing. The program addresses the increased risk of abuse in the absence of productive activities and facilitates accessible technology for communication among separated family members. Ensuring access to after-school programs and community services, it offers children and youth the chance to enjoy essential leisure activities, bridging crucial gaps in support.
